Matt K's Port Power Game Preview

Coming off the bye, Freo should be plenty refreshed, and ready to hit Port with everything. That is, of course, keeping draft picks in mind. I mean, 5 rounds to go, massive injury list, retirement numbers mounting, and no finals hope. CEO and some assistant coaching staff leaving. Besides us lowly supporters in record numbers, what else is there?

Port did their level best to choke against Adelaide, as is their way, but even they couldn’t beat the slow starting, fast fading Adelaide team. They come into the game this week against Freo minus Chad Cornes – that’s fine though, because the Freo team never usually mans him up anyway (Not that he does much).

Choco will have his work cut out for him with the new look young midfield of Ibbo, Schammer, Palmer (if fit), and an offensive Crowley (in more than one way). If B-Rock can shake the hammy strain that has him listed as ‘test’ on the team’s site, he should be another to watch for. He, along with the usual suspects (Mayne, Pav and Ibbo ) were the spark that Freo required to come back from 30 points down at quarter time to win by 40-something.

If Harvs can engineer a win against Port, that might put some impetus back into the squad for a good go at 2009. But, having said that, remember the kids – won’t somebody think of the kids?!!

Matt K's spin on the Demons game

Well, that was breathtaking, and I’m not talking about the fact we won. I’m talking about Peake’s run up the wing. Pav’s goals and marshalling of the team around play. Tarrant’s tackling – not his goal kicking. There’s more, but I reckon it’s evident that I was impressed at parts of the game.

Having said that, there were some deplorable parts of play – see the entire first quarter, for instance. That Melbourne got 5 goals in the first quarter had fans near me asking the question “we turned up to the game, did the players?!!”. Fair enough, too.

Going in to the game without Palmer – it was suggested post game that he has a knee injury – it was thought that we might be struggling. But, for the final 3 quarters, Crowley, Pavlich, Schammer and Carr worked at the clearances, getting 38 – not great, but enough to win the game.

Fremantle defeat Dees by 46 points

FREMANTLE put a forgettable first quarter behind it to eventually complete a comfortable victory over Melbourne at Subiaco Oval on Sunday afternoon.

The home team triumphed by 46 points in the end after the Demons kicked the first six goals of the game and looked like they were going to run away with it early.

Fremantle was off the pace in the first quarter, but the home side kicked 16 of the last 20 goals to lodge it's third win of the season and leave Melbourne stranded on the bottom of the ladder.

Captain Matthew Pavlich was brilliant for the victors with 28 possessions, nine marks and five goals. Fellow forward Luke McPharlin also finished with three goals, 17 touches and seven marks.

Byron Schammer started on the ball and played his best game of the season to finish with 27 disposals and a goal and Garrick Ibbotson continued his breakout season across half back with 17 touches and a goal.

Six inclusions for Demons clash

Fremantle has recalled six players into its preliminary squad of 25 to face Melbourne on Sunday at Subiaco Oval. Veteran Shaun McManus, Paul Duffield, Kepler Bradley, Josh Head, Brock O’Brien and Ryan Murphy have been recalled at the expense of Dean Solomon (suspended), Rhys Palmer (general soreness) and Clayton Hinkley.

The squad will be reduced to a final team of 22 that will be announced tomorrow afternoon.

Senior Coach Mark Harvey is looking to rebound with a win against Melbourne and could use the horror last quarter against them last time to help get his players ready for the contest.

"It's an interesting game on the back of what happened during the last game. I think we've learned a lot from last time we played Melbourne," Mark said.

"There are some areas we need to focus on and both sides are depleted from an injury aspect, hence we've found ourselves in this situation where we're not playing in a finals scenario at the end of the year.
"I showed before last week's game the first quarter we played against Geelong the previous time, sometimes you go back and revisit that. So we might show them the last quarter against Melbourne as well when we gave them a win."

Cats Demolish Dockers

A MATCH that opened with spirit and no small amount of spite ended with a dull predictability as Geelong thumped Fremantle to the tune of 74 points on Saturday afternoon.

On a day when Fremantle's fire faded along with the daylight at Skilled Stadium, Geelong's class prevailed after appearing unsettled early to run out winners 18.10 (118) to 6.8 (44).

Most of the discussion from the game is sure to focus on Fremantle's niggling tactics and the injuries to high-profile Geelong pair, Cameron Ling and Gary Ablett.

Brownlow favourite Ablett limped from the ground late in the second quarter after appearing to roll his ankle, while Ling was at the centre of the match's most controversial moment when he was collected high by Fremantle's Dean Solomon in the first quarter. Solomon was reported for the clash which came on the back of several spot-fires as the Cats retaliated to Fremantle's deliberately unsettling play.

Neither Ablett nor Ling returned to the ground and will be the subject of much scrutiny in the lead up to Geelong's big match with the Western Bulldogs next weekend.

Conditions were cold, grey and blustery when the match got under way but a fiery opening ensured things heated up quickly, both on and off the field.

Browne to make a rare appearance for the dockers

Browne has not played an AFL game since round 22 last year due to terrible hamstring injuries that threatened to ruin his career, but the 23-year-old has regained some sensational WAFL form with Claremont and as a result coach Mark Harvey has no hesitation in bringing him in to replace the retired Bell.

Harvey said "Browne will play. We are pleased he has got through five games at WAFL level now and it suggests to us that he's ready for AFL level," Harvey said.

"It has taken enormous character for him to get back to playing with us. It has been a long road for Andrew and hopefully he can make the most of the next seven or eight weeks."

Harvey was also impressed with Farmer's WAFL performance two weeks ago when he kicked five goals for South Fremantle after being dropped for disciplinary reasons and he will take on Geelong.

"It has basically been two weeks out with the bye last week. I was happy with how he went back there (South Fremantle) and what he did," he said. "It was a minor offence that saw him put back there and I wasn’t going to go over the top with the penalty. We didn’t decide straight away after he played, it was based on selection yesterday and circumstances have changed a little as we didn’t know Peter Bell was going to retire."
