Freo cruises past Port but loses Barlow PDF Print E-mail

FREMANTLE has moved two games clear inside the top four with a 57-point win over Port Adelaide at Subiaco Oval on Saturday afternoon, but has lost star midfielder Michael Barlow to a broken left leg.

Late in the fourth quarter, with Fremantle cruising to its 10th win of the season and a 17.13 (115) to 8.10 (58) result, Barlow collided with teammate Rhys Palmer when running with the flight of the ball.

The 22-year-old rookie sensation, who is among the top three Brownlow Medal fancies, tried to stand up but couldn't support himself and was taken from the ground on a stretcher.

It took the sting out of an important win for Fremantle, which is now in a great position to earn a double chance in its first finals series since 2006.

Fremantle entered half time with a shaky 10-point lead and already missing Antoni Grover (hamstring) and Nat Fyfe (concussion), as well as late withdrawal Chris Tarrant, who was replaced by Alex Silvagni.

However, Ryan Crowley emerged as an unlikely game-breaker, booting five second-half goals as Freo defied a mounting injury toll to kick nine of the last 10 majors.

Aaron Sandilands (22 hit-outs and 18 disposals) was dominant in the ruck, while Palmer (31 possessions, six clearances and five inside 50s) played his best game since returning from a knee reconstruction.

Kreuzer injured as Blues fall narrowly to Freo PDF Print E-mail

FREMANTLE has proved it's no top-four fluke, holding off a fast-finishing Carlton to win by nine points at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night, but a potentially serious knee injury to Blues ruckman Matthew Kreuzer may be the main talking point from the match.

Freo won 14.12 (96) to 12.15 (87), but not before the Blues booted six final-term goals - four through Eddie Betts - to scare the life out of Mark Harvey’s team, which had looked to have the match well in control for most of the night.

The win shores up Fremantle’s position in the top four, while Carlton has now lost consecutive matches.

The game might also have far greater ramifications for the Blues, with No.1 ruckman Kreuzer appearing to suffer a serious knee injury early in the match.

His early exit from the match, combined with the Blues’ wayward kicking for goal, helped Fremantle get on top early and establish what would be a match-winning lead.

Michael Barlow (30 disposals, four goals) did his Brownlow Medal chances no harm, while Aaron Sandilands (49 hit-outs) took advantage of Carlton’s ruck woes. Defender Garrick Ibbotson was also terrific, as was most of Freo’s defence.

Despite the Blues winning most of the crucial statistics, Fremantle won the most important battle - on the scoreboard - to show AFL rivals it isn’t going to simply fall off the pace this season.

Mark Harvey’s team now boasts a 9-4 record but, having suffered two losses heading into the match, the Freo coach knew his side was under scrutiny.

Another step forward: Harvey PDF Print E-mail

FREMANTLE coach Mark Harvey says his young side took another giant step forward after recording a nine-point win over fellow finals contender Carlton at Etihad Stadium.

Consecutive losses to Adelaide and St Kilda had some questioning Freo's ability to maintain their early-season form, but Harvey was delighted with the team's greener players stepping up.

“We mixed up some of our younger players and gave them unfamiliar roles and they coped with it quite well,” he said after the match.

“Sometimes the opposition tends to focus on our older players but if you can move some of our younger players around in specific areas and they can understand what we are doing, they can jump up as well and I think they did that today.

“You look at periods of the game and starting to see our younger players take the game on when it’s pretty crucial.”

The win was Fremantle's third on the road in 2010, and the side goes into its mid-season break with nine wins and eying off a position in the top four for the first time since 2006.

“Some of our guys are getting pretty resilient,” Harvey said.

"We come at teams when we are behind … but more importantly when we get in front and we get challenged we still find something."

The Fremantle coach also paid tribute to midfielder Paul Hasleby who celebrated his 200th game in winning fashion, finishing the game with 21 possessions and one goal playing as a forward.

“He has had a hard road,” Harvey said.
