FREMANTLE has continued its recent dominance of West Coast and held its place in the top four, winning its sixth consecutive western derby by 38 points at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.

After trailing by 23 points early in the second quarter, Fremantle slammed on 11 consecutive goals and held West Coast to just two more to win 17.9 (111) to 10.13 (73).

Fremantle onballer Michael Barlow, in just the sixth game of his incredible debut season, was unanimously awarded the Ross Glendinning Medal. < He was the game’s dominant midfielder with 25 possessions, five clearances, five inside 50s and a goal.

Matthew Pavlich was well held for the majority of the match, but the skipper broke free in patches to influence the match with five goals.

Paul Duffield (24 possessions and nine rebound 50s) was also crucial for Fremantle, while David Mundy emerged in the second half to have an influence.
West Coast’s twin ruck attack of Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui edged dominant Fremantle big man Aaron Sandilands, winning the hit-outs 47-42.

Fremantle Dockers roar home after early scare against Richmond PDF Print E-mail

FREMANTLE overcame a sluggish start to defeat lowly Richmond by 39 points in the Anzac Day clash at Subiaco Oval.

The Dockers were wasteful in the first half, allowing the Tigers to kick six goals to one in the opening term before storming home to run out 15.22 (112) to 11.7 (73) winners.

But the home side drew on the spirit of the Anzacs to record their fourth win of the season and take valuable momentum into next Sunday’s Western Derby.

Ruckman Aaron Sandilands dominated all over the ground, collecting 16 possessions and kicking two goals to go with his 42 hitouts and five centre clearances.

Midfield pair Michael Barlow (32 disposals) and David Mundy (28 disposals) and defenders Greg Broughton and Paul Duffield were also among Fremantle’s best.

Dockers captain Matthew Pavlich booted four goals while small forward Hayden Ballantyne chipped in with three.

Tigers captain Chris Newman and centreman Nathan Foley made successful returns from injury while Brett Deledio and Robin Nahas also worked tirelessly.

Nahas and WA product Alex Rance both kicked three goals.

Ben Cousins had a return to Perth to forget as he struggled to have an impact on the game.

It was Cousins’s first game back since being suspended by the Tigers for giving teammate Luke McGuane one of his prescribed sleeping tablets and being disruptive at a team hotel in Sydney.

Fremantle’s first term was riddled with inaccurate kicking and poor disposal, both uncharacteristic of the club this season

Freo's run ends with bang, not whimper PDF Print E-mail

FREMANTLE'S undefeated run ended not with a whimper but a bang as Mark Harvey's side went the distance with St Kilda on Sunday evening.

The Saints won by 15 points, 16.12 (108) to 14.9 (93), with the game in the balance until late in the final quarter.

One point was the biggest margin at any of the breaks, with St Kilda ahead at quarter time, scores level at the half and Freo in front as they turned for home.

Four unanswered goals to begin the fourth quarter finally burst the game open for the Saints - who remain one of two undefeated sides - but even then the visitors struck back with goals to David Mundy and Clancee Pearce.

Stephen Milne responded to a tumultuous week by booting five goals, as did Brendon Goddard.

In the first week without injured skipper Nick Riewoldt it was a re-jigged Saints forward line to start the game with Jason Gram and Sam Fisher lined up in attack at the first bounce. They were soon joined by Goddard.

Goddard, who has spent the past few years as an onballer/backman was the dominant forward for the Saints and managed to outbody key defenders Luke McPharlin and Chris Tarrant.

Greg Broughton and Paul Duffield worked hard out of the back half for Fremantle while the season’s surprise packet Michael Barlow broke even in his duel with relentless tagger Clint Jones. Nick Dal Santo did as he pleased throughout the game and seemed to escape the attention of Fremantle who were focused on shutting down acting captain Lenny Hayes.

The Saints seemed undersized around the ground without Riewoldt and Justin Koschitzke. Their height deficiency was obvious, particularly when Aaron Sandilands was near the ball.
