Fremantle champion Pavlich set to remain a Docker for life PDF Print E-mail

FREMANTLE champion Matthew Pavlich has given the clearest indication yet that he will be a Docker for life.

Pavlich will be swamped with multi-million dollar deals when he is out of contract at the end of next season.
He will have numerous options including moving to new AFL club Gold Coast, ending his career back in home town Adelaide or staying with Fremantle where he started his decorated career a decade ago.

But the Dockers' greatest player has declared he is more likely to stay at Fremantle to see out his playing days.

"I'm contracted for another 15 months and I'm very confident that I will continue my career at Fremantle after that point in time," Pavlich said.

"I get so focused in the process of week to week and seeing our younger players developing further and for me it's very much about that core focus of that particular time.

"So it's hard for me to think big picture and commit to long-term outcome based thinking. That's just how I operate."

While Pavlich has raised the prospect of extending his career beyond next season, when he believes Fremantle could be poised for a return to the finals, he refused to reveal whether he would sign a new deal before his current contract expires.

Cats belt Freo by 40 points PDF Print E-mail

GEELONG has enjoyed the perfect finals tune-up and got some game time into a couple of returning stars in its 40-point win over Fremantle at a soggy Skilled Stadium.

The Cats led at every change in the 14.10 (94) to 8.6 (54) victory, becoming the first side in AFL/VFL history to win 18 or more games in three consecutive seasons.

Their quest for the 2009 flag got a serious boost with James Kelly and Brad Ottens making promising returns from long-term injury lay-offs.

Borderline duo Simon Hogan and Ryan Gamble also did their chances of playing finals no harm with hard-nosed displays on a day when there was nowhere to hide on a muddy Skilled Stadium.

With Steve Johnson likely to miss a month after hip surgery and Paul Chapman’s fragile hamstrings still keeping him out, this side may be pretty close to the one that features in Geelong’s finals campaign.

They might have lacked the sparkle Chapman and Johnson bring, but their tenacity and willingness to sacrifice for the cause could not be questioned.

Fremantle home by 54 points PDF Print E-mail

FREMANTLE has handed the AFL a promoter’s dream by defeating Essendon by 54 points at Subiaco Oval, setting up a final round do-or-die clash between the Bombers and Hawthorn to determine eighth spot next Saturday.

The form guide went out the window as Fremantle – so poor last week against Melbourne – outclassed the Bombers, who were coming off a magnificent win against ladder-leader St Kilda. Fremantle led at every change to run out comprehensive winners, 21.15 (141) to 13.9 (87).

A dominant performance by ruckman Aaron Sandilands (21 possessions and 42 hitouts) and multiple goals from Hayden Ballantyne (four), Luke McPharlin (three) and Clancee Pearce (three) saw Fremantle to its sixth win of the season.

Essendon must now find an answer to overcome its depleted ruck stocks and beat a resurgent Hawthorn at the MCG next week to cement a finals berth for the first time since 2004.

For Fremantle, the victory provided a degree of redemption after last week’s 63-point loss to Melbourne and further showcased the development of young players like Ballantyne, Pearce, Nic Suban and Matt de Boer.
